Nexans autoelectric is committed to sustainable vehicle development. One key way to reduce CO2 emissions is to save weight. In a joint project with Munich Technical University, customers and suppliers Nexans autoelectric is looking into opportunities for replacing copper wires with aluminium wires. Nexans autoelectric wants to be able to process aluminium as reliable and accurately as copper, to combine it with other materials and ensure it is fully functional at high temperatures.

Reducing conductor cross sections offers considerable potential for weight saving. Nexans autoelectric is working with selected conductor suppliers on trialling 0.13 mm² conductors. Nexans autoelectric is aiming to compensate for the small conductor cross section area by an optimum material composition, and to achieve high tensile strength and stability. After that the next step will be to develop innovative production processes to suit the special material properties of these conductors.
